Ordering Boots
Ordering custom boots starts with design communication and a deposit. Usually this means an email from the client establishing a rough idea of what they are looking for and my follow up. I take a $500 deposit to reserve your spot on my books. Once we establish the beginning of our bootmaking journey together we can map out our production schedule together. UHL custom boots usually take 3-5 months to complete from measurement to completion.
Pricing for a custom pair of UHL western boots starts at $3000 and depends on the intricacy of the design.
FAQs
Why are the boots so expensive?
Time. Customization. and Material cost.
One pair of UHL Western boots can take 100-200 hours to complete and is crafted using traditional bootmaking methods, one pair at a time. You will go through a custom design process, bringing a sketch depicting the boots of your dreams into reality and your exact measurements will be taken to ensure a proper fit. I use choice materials based on quality and purpose. The final product is a custom product that is durable and can be easily repaired by me or any of your local leather repair shops over and over throughout its life.
I don’t live in Colorado and I cannot travel there. Do you do virtual measurements?
If there is any possibility of getting measured by me in person I reccommend waiting for this opportunity. I have actually had great success doing virtual measurements but I prefer to have the control of having measured you myself since bootmaking is such an extensive project and remaking parts of the boot if something goes wrong can sometimes take hours or days. That said, I am open to taking measurements online and have happy clients who have gone through the process.
How did you learn bootmaking?
I’ve been making leatherwork under the name UnderHill Leather since 2015. I first started making bespoke shoes at the Brooklyn Shoe Space, and absorbed so much from being around that vibrant community of shoemakers. I learned cowboy boot making (traditional western construction) with Deanna McGuffin in 2017, navigating how to find the proper tools and machinery one pair at a time while working out of my tiny apartment in Brooklyn NY. In 2018 I started working for a footwear brand in an innovation lab making prototypes for the design department. Establishing that my true passion was making “art boots,” UnderHill Leather started offering cowboy boots and zip booties in 2019. Since then I have worked on refining my craftsmanship with every pair. Every project brings new challenges and new triumphs to this lifelong learning process.
